No matter if names or technical terms – in some cases you want to avoid a line break in Microsoft Word to improve the reading flow and the comprehension. But how do you do that? Here you can use a so called non breaking space in Word. This special character forces Word to exclude the following word from a line break. The word before and after the non breaking space thus remain better visually connected.

Not only one non breaking space possible:

Protecting a space is very convenient. However, you are not limited to this. If three or more words are so connected that you want to prevent the line break, then this is also possible. All you have to do is put a space in front of each word. Once you understand the principle, you will quickly be able to create the right formatting with this knowledge.

Step-by-step instructions:

  • Place the marker in front of the word that should not be subject to a line break in any case
  • Click on “Symbols” and “More symbols” in the “Insert” tab
  • Switch to the “Special characters” tab and select the non breaking space. With “Insert” it appears at the selected position
  • Done!

Tip: You can also use the key combination CTRL + Shift + Space for this.
