How to password protect a Word dokument

Not every work in Microsoft Word is meant for all eyes. Therefore, if you are going to corrupt files with sensitive content, you can secure them appropriately. We would like to show you how to password protect a Word document so that only you and the recipient can open it. However, since the question comes up almost as often, we will also explain how to remove the Word password, so that you are well informed about the protection of your Word files.

Important: Word password must also be saved!

It sounds almost trivial, but after you have stored a password in Word, the file must of course still be saved. We mention this explicitly, because many other areas, such as Windows, do not require such a thing and it is therefore a rather unusual procedure. At least this is what we noticed during our tests. Therefore, never forget to save, so that the password protection also works!

Step-by-step instructions:

This is how you to password protect a Word document:

  • Open Word and load the document
  • Click on the tab “File” and “Information”
  • Select “Protect document” and “Encrypt with password”
  • Enter a password and confirm with “OK”
  • Confirm the password to avoid typing errors
  • Save the file
  • Done!

This way you can remove the Word password again:

  • Open Word and load the document
  • Enter the current password to gain access
  • Click on the tab “File” and “Information”
  • Select “Protect document” and “Encrypt with password”
  • Remove the stored password so that only an empty line is displayed and click on “OK”
  • Save the file
  • Done!

With just a few clicks, you can create a good protection for your own Microsoft Word files. While we think that removing the password needs better labeling and explanation, after all, that’s exactly what this tutorial is for. We hope you enjoyed this post.
