Wolcen Lords of Mayhem Crash / Black Screen Fix

Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem officially launched on Steam on February 2nd 2020 and was quickly considered a secret “Diablo killer” due to its beautiful graphics and attention to detail. At the very least, it can be an interesting change from the barely changed Diablo. However, the Wolcen release wasn’t flawless and the game only ranks in the midfield on Metacritics. Especially in terms of bugs and problems, Wolcen quickly equaled Diablo in any case. Even test versions for large publishers were so buggy that the game could hardly be played through and it was not uncommon for the complete progress to be deleted live in the stream. The French developer team wanted to iron out most of the bugs with a day-one patch. In fact, this patch solved some problems, but left others open. Not least a bug that lets the RAM run full. The result: You will get Wolcen to crash without warning and often can’t be restarted afterwards. Interestingly, the game launches, but with a blackscreen and the background music. It is thus not possible to continue playing.

This can help against Wolcen crashes and the black screen:

Resourceful Steam users quickly found out about Wolcen’s memory exhaustion. This resulted in a work-around in a short time: the use of virtual RAM. Especially users of SSD hard drives are often affected by the Wolcen crash, since virtual memory is often disabled by default on SSD hard drives. However, we will show you how to enable virtual memory.

Step-by-step instructions:

  • Enter “show advanced system settings” in the Windows search
  • Go to the “Advanced” tab
  • Click on “Properties” for “Visual effects, processor scheduling, memory usage and virtual memory”
  • Go to the “Advanced” tab here as well
  • Click at “Virtual Memory” on “Change”
  • Uncheck the “Automatically manage file size for all drives” checkbox at the top
  • Select the appropriate hard disk
  • Check the “Size is managed by the system” checkbox at the bottom
  • Then click on “Set” and “OK”
  • Click on “Apply” in the previous window
  • You will get a message that you should restart your computer
  • Done!

Your computer can now access an alternative and build a virtual memory even if the physical memory is full. However, sufficient space on the hard disk is important for this. It is therefore useless to specify a full hard disk. With enough virtual memory you can now continue playing in any case. In general, virtual memory can also be an advantage, even if you don’t want to play Wolcen Lords of Mayhem, but generally want to get a bit more performance out of your computer. If you have other problems, our Steam tutorials might also help you.
