Audacity Radio Effect

Audacity Radio Effect

Audacity is not only convincing because of the possibility to record your own voice, but also because of the many effects that can be used to edit recordings completely individually. In this article, we’ll take a look at how to set the radio effect in Audacity so that your voice sounds as if it were being spoken through a walky talky. We’ve also taken a bit of a cue from very well-known radio recordings like “Fire in the Hole” from Counter Strike, so you can get an idea of the result very quickly, since you may be familiar with these recordings. In any case, we hope to be able to quickly present you with a simple possibility.

This is important for your radio effect:

When setting up an Audacity radio effect, or any effect in general, it’s important to know what you want it to sound like in the end. With the radio, two factors are important. First, a radio has almost no bass because of the small diaphragm. Recordings that are very bassy and loud also cause scratchiness. If you pay attention to these two points, you will definitely succeed. By the way, similar but not identical factors are also important if you want to create a phone sound in Audacity. For this we have made a separate tutorial. Take a look!

Step-by-step instructions:

  • First record in Audacity the one that will later have the radio sound
  • Mark everything
  • Go to Effect -> Equalization
  • Set points on the line at 300Hz, 400Hz, 2000Hz and 2100Hz
  • Now drag the two points at 300Hz and 2100 Hz to -30dB, so that only in the middle a range remains audible
  • Click OK and you’re done!
  • Info: If the sound is too quiet, go to Effect -> Normalize
  • Done!

As you can see, the whole thing is not witchcraft, but to find the right settings in the tools yourself is very difficult. Therefore, it is sometimes useful to learn the right solutions from professionals and to be able to use them for your own projects. We wish you a lot of fun with the radio effect and hope that you can now edit your own exciting audio recordings. Good luck!
